The recorded history of Craps dates all the way back to a dice game referred to as Hazard, which goes back to Bernard de Mandeville in New Orleans in Eightteen Thirteen. Hazard is believed to be a descendant of Azzahr, which means ‘the die’ a game played by Arabs.

The game evolved as it traveled from the Arab countries to Europe and then to England. By the early 1700s, formal established rules for Hazard had been developed. France adopted the British variation of Hazard and is believed to have been brought to the new world by early French settlers. In the mid-18th century, when the English beat the French in Canada, the French settlers moved to Louisiana. Dice were played on river boats, casinos and wharfs and a simplified ‘US’ version of Craps was developed. The game headed west and is a favored game that is competed in all over the United States and all over the planet.

The name ‘Craps’ is theorized to be a French articulation of the term crabs, which refers to two ones. There are two basic types of Craps that are gambled on-street Craps and casino Craps. Street caps, accurately named because it’s gambled on the streets is where a hurler establishes a point and then attempts to roll that point. The betting is made either for or against the shooter and someone must cover the bet in order for the craps game to carry on.

In casino Craps, which is the popular game, gambled on in casinos, the betting house banks the game. The players play with the casino-the casino covers all of the wagers of all of the individuals. Craps used to be a quite well-liked casino game but in the past twenty years had split itself and other games, like poker and chemin de fer became more popular. However, Craps is experiencing a surge in popularity once again in internet casinos and in real world betting houses.
