Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is just about 100 years old. Current craps come about from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, but Hazard is said to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s soldiers bet on Hazard amid a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the English, the French moved down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was derived from the term for the bad luck throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and throughout the nation. Most acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the modern craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. Later, he developed the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
