Be cunning, play cunning, and pickup craps the right way!
Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps formed from the old English game called Hazard. No one knows for sure the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is said to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s knights bet on Hazard through a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the English, the French moved south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was acquired from the name of the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and across the nation. A few acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn built the modern craps setup. He appended the Do not Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he created the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
