Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is only about one hundred years old. Current craps developed from the old English game called Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the ancestry of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s horsemen wagered on Hazard during a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when banished by the English, the French relocated down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was derived from the name of the non-winning toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the nation. A great many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the modern craps layout. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he designed the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
