Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps formed from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is believed that Sir William’s knights enjoyed Hazard during a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the English, the French moved south and located refuge in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was derived from the term for the non-winning throw of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and across the nation. A few acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn designed the modern craps setup. He created the Don’t Pass line so players can wager on the dice to not win.
