Be cunning, play clever, and discover how to play craps the proper way!

Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about 100 years old. Current craps evolved from the old English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s soldiers played Hazard amid a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the English, the French headed down south and located sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is acquired from the term for the non-winning toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and across the nation. A few think the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the current craps setup. He created the Don’t Pass line so players could wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he designed the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
