Be cunning, play smart, and pickup craps the proper way!
Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about one hundred years old. Current craps formed from the ancient English game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the origin of the game, but Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s horsemen gambled on Hazard amid a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when driven away by the English, the French relocated down south and found sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was derived from the term for the bad luck throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and all over the nation. Many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the modern craps setup. He appended the Do not Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he developed the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
