Be brilliant, play cunning, and master craps the correct way!

Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps evolved from the old Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the ancestry of the game, although Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is believed that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard amid a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the British, the French relocated down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is derived from the name of the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and across the country. A few think the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the current craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. Later, he invented the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
