Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps evolved from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s paladins played Hazard amid a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when displaced by the English, the French moved south and located sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was acquired from the name of the non-winning toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the nation. A great many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn built the modern craps setup. He created the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he invented the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
