Be brilliant, play clever, and learn how to play craps the correct way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is just about 100 years old. Current craps evolved from the old English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the birth of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s soldiers played Hazard through a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when driven away by the British, the French headed south and settled in southern Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is acquired from the term for the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the nation. Most think the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn designed the current craps layout. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so players can wager on the dice to lose. Later, he created the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
