Be cunning, play clever, and discover how to play craps the proper way!
Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is just about a century old. Modern craps evolved from the ancient English game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s horsemen gambled on Hazard during a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when expelled by the British, the French headed down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was acquired from the name of the non-winning toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and throughout the nation. Most consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the modern craps setup. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. Later, he created the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
