Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps formed from the old Anglo game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the origin of the game, however Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s paladins bet on Hazard amid a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the English, the French headed south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is derived from the term for the non-winning toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the country. Most think the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn created the current craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he established the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
