Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps formed from the old Anglo game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s knights gambled on Hazard through a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when exiled by the British, the French moved south and found sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is derived from the term for the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and across the nation. A great many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the modern craps layout. He created the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he designed the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
