Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Current craps evolved from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the origin of the game, but Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s soldiers bet on Hazard during a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the British, the French relocated down south and discovered sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was derived from the term for the bad luck throw of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the nation. A few think the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn developed the current craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he invented the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
