Be brilliant, play cunning, and master craps the correct way!

Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Modern craps come about from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the birth of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s believed that Sir William’s soldiers wagered on Hazard through a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the British, the French moved south and located sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is acquired from the name of the non-winning toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and all over the nation. Most acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the current craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. Later, he invented the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
