Be smart, play cunning, and become versed in craps the right way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps developed from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the origin of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s soldiers enjoyed Hazard amid a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when driven away by the English, the French relocated down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is acquired from the name of the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and throughout the country. A few acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn designed the current craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players can bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he developed the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
