Be cunning, play clever, and master craps the proper way!

Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Current craps come about from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, although Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is believed that Sir William’s paladins bet on Hazard through a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the English, the French headed down south and located sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was acquired from the term for the bad luck throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and all over the country. Many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn designed the current craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so players can bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he created the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
