Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about 100 years old. Modern craps evolved from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the origin of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s believed that Sir William’s knights wagered on Hazard amid a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when driven away by the British, the French relocated south and discovered safety in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was acquired from the term for the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and all over the nation. A few think the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the current craps setup. He created the Don’t Pass line so players can wager on the dice to not win. Later, he invented the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
