Be brilliant, play smart, and master craps the right way!
Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is only about a century old. Modern craps come about from the old Anglo game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s believed that Sir William’s knights wagered on Hazard amid a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the English, the French moved south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is derived from the term for the losing toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and all over the country. A good many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the current craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he invented the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
