Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps evolved from the ancient English game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the origin of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s horsemen wagered on Hazard during a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when displaced by the English, the French moved south and found sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is gotten from the term for the non-winning throw of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the nation. Many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the current craps setup. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he designed the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
