Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is just about 100 years old. Current craps developed from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William’s soldiers played Hazard through a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the English, the French headed down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was gotten from the term for the losing throw of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and all over the country. Most consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the current craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he invented the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
