Be brilliant, play smart, and master craps the correct way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps formed from the old English game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the birth of the game, but Hazard is said to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s knights gambled on Hazard during a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when exiled by the British, the French moved south and located refuge in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is acquired from the name of the non-winning throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the country. Many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so players could wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he established the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
