Be cunning, play brilliant, and become versed in craps the proper way!
Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is just about 100 years old. Current craps come about from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s paladins enjoyed Hazard through a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the English, the French relocated south and discovered refuge in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is derived from the term for the losing throw of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the country. Most consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn developed the modern craps layout. He created the Don’t Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he invented the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
