Be smart, play cunning, and learn how to play craps the ideal way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is only about one hundred years old. Modern craps formed from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is believed that Sir William’s horsemen gambled on Hazard during a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the English, the French relocated south and discovered sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is acquired from the term for the bad luck throw of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and all over the nation. A few think the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the current craps setup. He created the Don’t Pass line so players can wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he designed the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
