Be clever, play smart, and learn how to play craps the proper way!
Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Current craps evolved from the old English game called Hazard. No one knows for sure the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s knights gambled on Hazard amid a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when driven away by the British, the French moved down south and located safety in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was gotten from the term for the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and throughout the country. A few think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the current craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he invented the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
