Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Current craps developed from the ancient English game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is believed that Sir William’s soldiers bet on Hazard through a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when expelled by the British, the French moved south and settled in southern Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is derived from the term for the losing throw of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and throughout the nation. Many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn built the modern craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so players could wager on the dice to lose. Later, he designed the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
