Be smart, play clever, and pickup craps the correct way!
Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is just about one hundred years old. Current craps developed from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the ancestry of the game, although Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s horsemen bet on Hazard during a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when expelled by the British, the French headed south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is derived from the name of the non-winning toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and across the country. A few think the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn developed the modern craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so players can wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he established the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
