Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about one hundred years old. Current craps evolved from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, although Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s paladins gambled on Hazard amid a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when banished by the English, the French moved south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is derived from the term for the losing toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and across the country. Many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the current craps layout. He created the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. Later, he developed the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
