Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is only about 100 years old. Current craps evolved from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s soldiers bet on Hazard amid a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the English, the French relocated down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is gotten from the name of the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the country. Many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn designed the current craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. Later, he created the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
