Be smart, play brilliant, and discover how to play craps the correct way!
Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is only about a century old. Current craps formed from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s horsemen enjoyed Hazard during a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the British, the French relocated south and located sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was acquired from the name of the non-winning toss of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and across the country. Many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the modern craps layout. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so players could wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he created the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
