Be smart, play cunning, and become versed in craps the proper way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about a century old. Modern craps developed from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s soldiers wagered on Hazard through a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the British, the French moved south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is gotten from the term for the non-winning toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and across the nation. Most think the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn built the current craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so players can bet on the dice to lose. Later, he developed the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
