Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Current craps come about from the old English game called Hazard. No one knows for sure the birth of the game, however Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard during a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the British, the French headed south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was gotten from the name of the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the nation. Most consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn designed the modern craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so players can wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he designed the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
