Be cunning, play cunning, and learn how to play craps the correct way!
Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is only about one hundred years old. Modern craps evolved from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. No one knows for sure the origin of the game, however Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is believed that Sir William’s paladins bet on Hazard through a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when driven away by the British, the French relocated down south and found safety in southern Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is gotten from the name of the bad luck throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the nation. Many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the modern craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. Later, he designed the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
