Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is only about a century old. Modern craps developed from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s soldiers played Hazard amid a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when expelled by the British, the French relocated south and settled in southern Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is gotten from the term for the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and throughout the nation. A few consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn built the current craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. Later, he developed the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
