Be smart, play clever, and become versed in craps the right way!
Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is only about one hundred years old. Current craps come about from the old Anglo game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the birth of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is believed that Sir William’s paladins bet on Hazard amid a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when driven away by the British, the French moved down south and found sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was derived from the name of the bad luck throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and throughout the country. A few think the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn developed the modern craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so players can wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he developed the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
