Be cunning, play smart, and master craps the right way!
Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about a century old. Modern craps come about from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s horsemen bet on Hazard through a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when expelled by the British, the French headed down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was gotten from the name of the bad luck throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and throughout the nation. A few think the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the current craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he developed the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
